ENGAGE

EXPLORE- In this phase of the learning cycle, students first review the water cycle, then they go through a watershed modeling activity where they explore concepts such as water table, saturated and unsaturated zones, unconfined aquifers.

EXPLAIN- As students move through the aquifer modeling activity above, they can complete the handout titled “What Flows Beneath” to explain what is happening at each step. If a Groundwater Model is available, it can be used to recap concepts about groundwater.

EVALUATE- The online quiz below can serve as an alternative summative assessment. Students can take the quiz several times and take a screenshot to show the teacher when they get over a certain amount of time. The Groundwater Learning Check is a more traditional assessment.

ELABORATE- A great, WhoDunnit activity using groundwater concepts (part of the ProjectWet materials). The full lesson description can be found at: https://web.uri.edu/smile/files/Lesson_Plan_A_Grave_Mistake.pdf. Students can read about how hydrologists locate groundwater here.
